So guys, if you know Albanians well then you’ll know what comes hand in hand with being Albanian…. RAKI. For those of you who do not know what it is, its almost like Vodka…just a lot stronger! (40%-45% alcohol) I think raki is probably one of the most traditional Albanian drinks, if not THE most traditional, definitely a drink that’s seen in almost every Albanian household. I am going to go ahead and assume that majority of the Albanians have one way or another tried raki…whether it was by choice or by accident. Am I right?
I hate raki, the smell, the taste but I somehow find myself drinking it every year. Please don’t be fooled and think I voluntarily drink it…no no no. For those of you who do not know what raki looks like, it looks like water. See where I’m going with this? My family back home make their own Raki and tend to put it in bottles which in turn leaves little old me left spitting it all out and with a nasty taste in my mouth afterwards. For some strange reason, I always find myself in the same position each year…my head over the sink about to throw up.
